Tipperary County Museum creates spectacular Exhibition: 150 years of the Clonmel Show

Spanning the years 1865 – 2015, Tipperary County Museum situated in Mick Delahunty Square, Clonmel has put both International and Local events in context, covering many genres and making the exhibition accessible to many interested groups. The exhibition details significant events or developments through the Clonmel Show’s history, such as:

The date when the show was first founded in Clonmel Courthouse in 1872.

When War Horses were sold at the Clonmel Show.

When civil and world wars broke out or when ‘foot and mouth’ hit the nation, no shows could be held.

When Ballingarrane House hosted a ‘Charity Ugly Dog Competition’ in the 1931.

Visitors can browse through the decades and discover interesting snippets of information via the extensive timeline created especially for the exhibition. Visitors will also discover that the Clonmel Show was developed by local farmers, landlords and business men who saw the need and urgency in developing land for farming, inventing new farming equipment and raising the standards in breeding pedigree horses, cattle, sheep and pigs.

The research which Marie McMahon, Museum Curator has undertaken, portrays the early committee members of the Cattle Show and later Clonmel District Agricultural Society, as hard working, pioneering innovators. Their meticulous attention to detail can be seen in the many artefacts on display such as the minute books, shareholder books, catalogues and the many beautiful perpetual trophies, fine leather saddles and robust riding clothes…

The Clonmel Show’s Exhibition is educational, innovative, fun & vibrant. The Museum would like to extend an invitation to local schools, community groups, active retirement groups, local businesses and visitors to pop along to the museum and see what Clonmel was like 150 years ago.

This year’s Clonmel Show takes place on Sunday 02nd July 2023 and should prove to be a fun day out for all the family…
