SOMETHINGS NEW, SOMETHINGS OLD

Minister to visit Show
For that special family day out visit the Clonmel Show on Sunday next, the 3rd of July, in Clonmel Racecourse. Forget the recession blues and enjoy the craic for the day. Meet the neighbours, see the horses and livestock, smell the flowers, buy local produce from the Farmers’ Market stalls and enjoy the Donkey Derby. A packed programme of events, some old and some new has been planned. The 2011 Show will build on previous years’ successful formulae, with some changes in format and layout, some interesting new features, together with many of the old favourites. This will be a very special family day out “where town meets country” in the lovely Powerstown Park.

The Minister for Agriculture, Marine and Food, Mr Simon Coveney TD, will visit the show on Sunday afternoon. This is the first visit by a minister for agriculture for many years and the show committee extends a Cluain Meala cead mile failte to him.

This section is being coordinated by local Macra activist Michael Mocklair

Traditional skills will be displayed with live demonstrations of dry stone wall building, hot coal horse shoeing and basket weaving.

Poultry classes made their return last year, after an absence of 30 years, but this year will also involve a poultry exchange where breeders can show and buy or sell their birds. Side by side with the domestic poultry will be a Falconery display of birds of prey.

Recent Additions

The Clonmel Show Shovel and Turnip championship, which will feature two heats of six and a final over the Donkey Derby course.

There will be competitions for the most appropriately dressed lady, gentleman and grandmother attired in clothes that best reflect the occasion and the weather. The final six will be chosen by a panel of judges and the winners of each competition will receive a cheque for €250. All six finalists in each section will receive vouchers. Some of the winners will be chosen by public ballot.

A Bonnie Baby contest for the bonniest baby under one year of age will also be staged and judged during the afternoon

This year the Donkey Derby has a novel way of selecting some of its riders from a panel of volunteers, who will have submitted their CVs before hand for selection to the derby organiser John Fitzgerald (mobile no. 086 2375473) The Derby will feature some of Ireland’s top Point-to-Point riders. This derby is unique with the asses starting from ‘starting stalls’

There will also be classes for organic produce and for new “grow your own” gardeners

This year the show will feature a Farmers’ Market, with many of the stalls holders that attend the various local markets weekly setting up their stalls at Clonmel Show. They will be drawn from a wide area and many will be selling for the first time in the Clonmel area. The full range of products, all grown or produced locally, will be on display and their proud producers will be on hand to make a sale or offer their own homespun advice.

Coolmore Stud continues their generous sponsorship of their All Ireland Thoroughbred Broodmare Championship. This Class is for T.B. broodmares likely to produce a high-class racehorse. It will be judged on conformation alone at 2.15 pm. There will also be classes for the best colt and filly foals, which are the progeny of these mares. These classes usually attract some of the finest Thoroughbred Brood mares with National Hunt pedigree in Ireland Miniature Horses classes will be judged in the main ring. Seven classes are listed and will be judged from 3.15pm onwards in front of the Grand Stand. In the past these horses have proved to be a unique spectacle An attraction that is always interesting and stimulating is the question and answer “clinic” during the Pet show about pets and their problems, hosted by a number of local vets.

Another attraction that is sure to create a lot of interest will be the qualifiers for the Gain Dog Food All Ireland Dog Handling Championships and the Puppy Parlour Kenmare Munster Dog Championships. There will be two classes, one for toy or miniature dogs to be handled by a child under 15 - 16 years of age, and another class for a large dog of any breed to be handled by an adult. These classes will be judged before the Pet show at 2.30pm. Entries will be taken on the showgrounds on the day. These classes are really for non pedigree dogs!

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS

The Dog Agility classes will again be featured this year, when for the first time at Clonmel Show many All Ireland championship finals will be decided. These classes will see a variety of trained agility dogs of all sizes and shapes, competing accompanied by their handlers. These handlers must help their animals negotiate see-saws and hurdles, cross dog walks, weave through bending poles and run blind through darkened tunnels, all against the clock. These tests will commence at 9.0am and continue throughout the day. Dogs performing these skills are often featured on television during the world famous annual Crufts’ Dog show in London. 65 dogs have been entered for the ten listed classes

The Food Marquee hosts a display of quality foods produced in the Tipperary area, including both established brands and new products. Show patrons will have the opportunity to sample a range of culinary delights at many of these stands.

The Adult Art competition will be judged before lunch and open to the public from 2.00pm onwards. This year will also feature a qualifier class for amateur artists to an All Ireland Final in Oldcastle on 2nd August

Sheep dog trials will be staged once again this year, commencing at 10.00am and featuring open singles and doubles. Clonmel Show is almost unique in hosting a doubles event; whereby a pair of sheepdogs work together to round up and drive sheep through sets of obstacles into a pen, as seen on the popular BBC programme "One Man and His Dog.”

Abbott-Vascular and Enfer will sponsor the Children’s’ Programme. Every year the children’s’ corner is an oasis for parents – a place for parents to sit and chat with other parents and friends, as their offspring enjoy lambs, calves, bonhams(piglets), kittens, puppies, ducks, hens and ponies. Children will have the chance to hug and hold all these lovely animals. There will be carnival amusements, bouncy castles, face painting, practical art and crafts. Pony and trap rides will be available for the smaller children from 2.00pm to 4.30pm. All activities in the Children’s’ Corner are free of any charge.

The Pet Show will be judged on the Green between the Club and Old Stands, at 3.00pm, with prizes for every competing child and their pet. There will be special prizes for the best, the smallest, the best mannered, the most unique and the oddest pets. The Muiris Dromey Memorial perpetual cup will be awarded to the best pet in the show. The pet show was the brainchild of Muiris, who started this major attraction more than 25 years ago and encouraged its development in the intervening years. Children and their pets are entitled to free entry to the show-grounds; entries for the pet show will be taken at the Green at 2.30pm. An entry fee of one Euro per pet is charged for the Pet Show. There will be a question and answer session about pets and their problems, hosted by a number of local vets after the Pet Show

At 4.45pm the Star Fuels sponsored Personality Donkey Derby will be run off, in two heats and a grand final, over the infamous "Aintree Derby Course!"  Again this year the donkeys and riders will start from starting stalls. There is still huge amount of media interest in this unique donkey derby start. Nowhere else in the world do donkeys start a derby from starting stalls! These stalls should lead to a more even break and a fairer start to this year’s hilarious donkey derby. Riders will bravely attempt to stay on board their donkeys and complete the course. The winning rider will be invited to join the very exclusive "Clonmel Show Sore Asses Club,” of which most previous donkey derby riders have been members, for a few days at least!

This will be the 33rd anniversary of the first running of the donkey derby. Special thanks are due to Eddie O’Gorman and his family for their involvement over all those years. The list of riders who participated over the years reads like a whose-who of local & national politics, sport and television, not to mention the occasional Rose of Tralee and Miss Ireland! Rumours are suggesting that some recently elected County Councillors will ride in this year’s derby and a previous winner may return to defend her title

A large display of new cars and 4 x 4s will form part of an expanding trade stands area. There will be a broad selection of companies displaying their wares, with everything from garden essentials to local crafts, new tractors to flavoured milks. The agricultural machinery section in particular promises to be bigger and better than ever. Many of the local car dealers will be showing their new models, likewise the farm machinery manufacturers, all hoping to make a sale!
