Management of the Clonmel Show Society 2011
Clonmel Show is run by a committee of management of more than sixty people, under the chairmanship of Bill Carroll. This is Bill’s second year as chairman of the show, and we wish him continued success with the show and hope that the sun will shine for him on show day. Bill has big plans and new ideas to further develop the Show into an even more special and memorable family day out for all. He set up a new Innovation Committee this year composed in the main of younger members with new ideas, many of which are incorporated in this year’s show. His energy, dedication and efficiency as the “team captain” are very apparent and much appreciated. Clare Wilkinson is the new vice-chairman of the show. She too brings her own special youthful drive and enthusiasm to this position.
Carrie Acheson has been an extremely active president of Clonmel Show, over the past nine years, when she succeeded the new chairman’s late father in 2002 She always made a special effort to meet and greet everybody on show day. She has continued to do Trojan work prior to the show again this year. She has been responsible for the organising and co-ordination of the show’s sponsors. Rebecca Purcell has been helping Carrie with this big workload. Richard Quirke and Eddie O'Gorman are the current vice presidents. Almost 250 volunteers act as stewards on show day and help in the preparations for and dismantling of the show. Mrs Sheila Quinn is the super efficient show secretary, who gets through her huge workload quietly and without any fuss. Her contribution to the organisation of the annual show is enormous. Each of the other sections have their own respective organisers, all of whom work extremely hard to co-ordinate all the parts into one great show, they are Tom and Eileen Acheson, Gail Long, Mildred Stokes, Paddy O’Keeffe, Mary Quinlan, Maura Donovan, Jane Farrell, Helen O’ Dwyer, Maura O’ Donovan, William Burke, Margaret Widger, Mary O’ Neill, Kitty Delany, Breda Lee, Mary McCormack, Alan Ahearne, Eddie and Maire O’Gorman, Shay Kennedy, Paddy Quinlan and John FitzGerald. John C. Byrne and Michael Mulcahy are the show’s safety officers, a very responsible position, as the public mingle with animals throughout the show-grounds. John and Michael appeal to everybody attending the show to take care and be alert in order to avoid any mishaps!
PRESENT POSITION
Clonmel Show Society is a registered charity, which ensures that no member or shareholder can benefit financially from any distribution of profits or monies from the sale of show property. Negotiations to complete the sale of the remainder of the Davis Road property were completed, eventually, in early 2008. A major development has now been completed on this portion of the old show-grounds. The lower field (the old greyhound racing track) was purchased from Clonmel Show in 2002, by a consortium of very committed local greyhound owners in partnership with Bord na gCun. Following re-development work by the Davis Road Greyhound Racing Co on the old track, greyhound racing continues to go from strength to strength. The show committee purchased a 75-acre farm near Lisronagh in 2005. It is planned to develop this farm into a show-grounds and a location for various other equestrian activities over the next few years. A number of Point to Points have already taken place on this excellent property over the past six years.
